A horse is pulled up when the jockey decides it is unsafe to keep racing, and so pulls the reins to stop the horse from running any further. It occurs most often in National Hunt races when horses leap over jumps, and is part of a jockey’s duty of care. If the horse you back pulls up in a race then you lose your bet.
